400 Years of the Telescope - A collection of desktop wallpapers celebrating the upcoming event
2009 will mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first telescopic observations of the cosmos. In celebration of the opening of this new era in astronomy, the astronomical communities of the world, both professional and amateur, are planning a year of events under the banner "The International Year of Astronomy (IYA)."

In accordance with the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), two of the United States' premier planetariums, Interstellar Studios, Southern Oregon Public Television (SOPTV), and leading astronomers, historians and science writers will produce a yearlong innovative set of integrated visual experiences, celebrations, and public education and outreach program.

An initial component is a high-definition PBS television broadcast, followed by a companion full dome planetarium program that will weave technology, science, and the human experience together, and launch viewers into a world of discovery via the Internet and science centers nationwide. The video production and planetarium program will be translated into many of the world's most commonly spoken languages for international distribution.

We hope that everyone will be inspired to look at the skies and appreciate the journey of discovery that began with Galileo's simple act of gazing through two small pieces of polished glass.
