The Definition of Yield Point: The first point at which permanent deformation of a stressed specimen begins to take place. This is a point on the stress-strain curve at which the increase in strain is no longer proportional to the increase in stress.

Methods for determining the yield point from the stress-strain curve include: Meredith's construction, which sets the yield point as the point at which the tangent to the curve is parallel to the line joining the origin and the breaking point; and Coplan's construction, which defines the yield point as occurring at the stress given by the intersection of the tangent at the origin with the tangent having the least slope.
