PDF2ID 2.0

A PDF document conversion tool for Adobe InDesign.
PDF2ID is a PDF document conversion tool for Adobe InDesign.

PDF2ID converts PDF documents into a fully editable InDesign file recreating the intended construction and layout of the document.

PDF2ID recreates the intended construction and layout of the document by forming paragraphs; applying styles; regrouping independent graphic elements; extracting images; creating tables; recovering annotations and other elements automatically. PDF2ID converts every page in a PDF file to an equivalent page in the resulting InDesign document.

PDF2ID also provides options for converting or extracting data from a range of pages in a PDF document. You can extract text or images, or convert the entire document to the InDesign format.

PDF2ID enables recovery and reuse of the contents stored in PDF documents making them available for use by anyone. Since PDF2ID is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign it is not necessary to acquire and install additional PDF editing software and tools, resulting in huge cost savings in both time and expense.

PDF2ID extracts text to form lines, then groups the lines to make paragraphs; applies text fonts and styles such as bold and underline where possible; regroups independent graphic elements; and creates tables. Furthermore, it performs contextual analytics so that related data are correlated and remain together.

As part of the conversion process, PDF2ID also transforms gradients in a PDF file to an equivalent gradient in InDesign, applies clipping paths to images and sets the appropriate InDesign property. Furthermore, it converts text that is on a path to an equivalent InDesign representation. Finally, transparencies and graphics transformations such as rotations, shearing and scaling are also converted to an equivalent InDesign data type.

PDF2ID has been designed to provide editing flexibility rather than a pure and 100% reconstruction of a PDF file to the InDesign format.

PDF2ID doesn't make InDesign a PDF file-editing tool. PDF2ID doesn't provide round-tripping of a PDF file to an editable InDesign file type.

Rather, the primary scope and objective of PDF2ID is to provide a seamless and transparent mechanism for PDF data recovery and reuse within InDesign. To achieve this, PDF2ID does its best to preserve the layout while reconstructing data along with the respective property and elements wherever possible.

Main features of PDF2ID:

  • Open and Convert PDF documents directly in Adobe InDesign CS2/CS3: PDF2ID is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign that enables you to directly open and convert PDF documents with in Adobe InDesign CS2/CS3 and supports both the Macintosh and Windows platforms.
  • Specify Conversion Options: PDF2ID provides detailed conversion controls such as converting the entire PDF file; extracting only text; recovering only images and annotations contained in a PDF document allowing fine-tuning the conversion process.
  • Familiar Interface: PDF2ID uses the standard Adobe InDesign interface for opening a PDF document- there is no need to learn anything new.
  • Quick: PDF2ID converts a PDF file to Adobe InDesign format within seconds.
  • Password Protected PDF documents: Convert password-protected PDF documents1.
  • Multi-Language/Asian Language Support: Supports English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Western European-language data contained in PDF documents.

    Requirements of PDF2ID:

  • 512 MB.
  • Adobe InDesign CS2/CS3

    Limitations of PDF2ID:

  • All images are down-sampled o 72dpi (irrespective of Processing Type).
  • Up to the first 10 pages are converted.
  • Expires after 14 days of installation.
  • The EXtract Only Annotations and Extract Only images processing types will only convert the 1st page.
  • Every other character is replaced with a random text character in the "Full Format" and Extract only Text processing types.

    What's New in This Release:

    Standard and Professional editions:
  • Frames Linking - A logical text frames linking mechanism has been introduced. PDF2ID automatically links text frames that are deemed logically connected. This allows text to flow from 1 frame to another and allows easier selection and editing.
  • PDF Inspector - A PDF Inspector has been added, allowing you to view the meta-data, document restrictions information and fonts used in a PDF document.
  • Presets - Custom conversion presets can be specified and saved for use later. This alleviates having to specify conversion settings every time.
  • Typeface Library - PDF2ID v2.0 remembers and stores all font substitutions made into a Typeface library. This eliminates the necessity to repeatedly specify font substitutions. The mappings in the Typeface library can be replaced and over-ridden as required.
  • PDF Annotations Recovery Enhancements - Annotations in PDF documents can be recovered into any open InDesign document. Furthermore, annotations can now be separated according to the author.
  • Custom name settings - You can now specify custom character style names, paragraph style names and images that are linked.
  • JPEG2000 image support (Windows specific change) - JPEG2000 images stored in PDF files are now properly recognized and converted for Windows (the Macintosh version of PDF2ID always supported JPEG2000 images).
  • Conversion Enhancements - Paragraphs are now properly formed for text in table cells. Drop Caps properties and limited Drop Shadow property support has been implemented. General conversion improvements in graphics handling, transparency application, text frame reduction and many other enhancements have been added.

    Professional edition:
  • Color Space settings - The Professional edition of PDF2ID fully supports conversion of PDF documents to InDesign format by specifying other color spaces. The additional color spaces supported are PDF document color space, CMYK and Lab Colors. When PDF document color space is specified, the color property of each object is now preserved in its native color space when converted to the InDesign format.
  • CMYK-TIFF - The Professional edition of PDF2ID provides an option to convert images to CMYK-TIFF format.
  • Parallel Processing - The Professional edition of PDF2ID provides unprecedented performance through the usage of parallel processing on machines that possess multi-core/mult-processor systems. PDF conversions can execute up to 700% faster on machines with 2 processors and 4 cores per processor (i.e. Dual Processor Intel-XEON machines). Single/Dual/Quad Processor machines with a minimum of 2 or 4 cores per processor will see the maximum performance improvements.
